About me (Please describe yourself or your company):
Jan Van Blarcum, Ph.D., Owner and Founder
In 1999, Jan Van Blarcum, Ph.D. founded a local tutoring company that caters to the individual needs of a child. As an educator, Dr. Van Blarcum understood the importance of personalized attention in a child’s educational growth. Her passion for learning grew into a business endeavor that provides one-on-one tutoring to children with a variety of learning needs. Every child receives personalized, one-on-one attention from certified/degreed educators.
When Jan decided to Franchise Creative Tutors in 2004, she began her process and methodology slowly and steadily to perfect the model along the way. She has gained momentum the past few years and in 2008 will officially launch the Creative Tutors Franchise Opportunity. Getting in on the ground floor and learning and growing through the process has made each owner stronger and more powerful during the journey.
I certainly appreciate the link. It is difficult to reach teachers, parents, students, and staff. Most police departments and educational institutions have their own protocol that they want to adhere too, however they are not thinking about the individual choice to live or die. There are things that they won't tell you because of the fear of a lawsuit. I have a disclaimer in my presentation which allows me to be open to suggest options for survival. Most police officers follow the code "Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6". In other words, they will do what it takes to survive. I teach faculty and staff how to survive without firearms. Most of the information is geared toward responsible adults, however, some information can be given to students. One of the first and most tragic multiple death incidents was enacted by a school board member named Andrew Kehoe. So as you can see, I have to be careful who I give information too.
Nice to hear from you. As a Director of Public Safety and former police officer, I was well aware of the dynamics of a shooting incident. However, I realized the typical everyday person was not. Especially the faculty, staff and students. I decided to do some information gathering and was astounded, there was not much information for the general public. There had be no testing of ballistics in the classroom to see what would stop bullets, or any courses in training the general masses. There were plenty of training courses for police officers, but they are after the fact in a shooting. Therefore, I created a course that last about 2 and 1/2 hours or longer, depending on how intense of a course is required. The information has be requested by over 225 colleges and universities throughout the nation and several other countries. I have a blog up that teaches these life saving tips and may be reached by going to http://activeshootersurvival.wordpress.com and you may reach my website either through the blog or you may go to http://www.schoolshootingsurvival.com or http://www.asresearchcenter.com
