Is it recommendable to obtain 'autonomo' status in Spain for the purpose of working as an English teacher?

Hello Wendi. It really depends on what you want to do. If you are earning around 1800 euros then it is normally worth your while. The general amount paid for autonomos at the moment is around 21 euros per hour. Work out what you are currently getting and then work out what you would get with your autonomo rate. For the first two years you only have to pay 7% tax as you are offering a service to the community. You then also have to pay your social security of around 240 per month and you will need to pay a gestor to file your tax returns (normally around 30 euros per month). You won't get paid holiday so you also have to factor that into your costs.

You can however approach companies directly and offer your services and you can invoice them as an auton. This is where you start to make more money as there is no middle man taking their percentage.

I hope this helps but if I can help clarify any other information - do let me. My email address is natasha@ttmadrid.com

Thanks

Thanks for the info. Do you know anything about the procedures involved in becoming an autonomo? From what little I have gathered it seems complicated and time consuming.
